Acceptable Identification Requirements
Province of Alberta - Registries requires us to ensure that clients are able to prove their identity AND residency in order for us to provide certain services.
As you can appreciate, these requirements are in place for a reason: to protect the public and to ensure that no one else can obtain your Identification Card or Driver’s License.
Accordingly, we simply CANNOT provide Alberta Identification Cards or Operator’s Licenses unless certain criteria are met. Please refer to the following list of documents that are acceptable:
Photo ID is preferred – any ONE of the following is acceptable:
- Existing image of client on the Motor Vehicle computer system – you must already have an Alberta Driver’s License or Identification Card **Note must also have supporting documents **.
- Current Driver’s License
- Indian Status ID Card
- Municipal, Provincial or Federal Police ID Card
- Passport
- Armed Forces ID Card
- Citizenship Certificate
- Immigration Authorization (for applicants originating from outside Canada)
- **PLEASE NOTE** School ID is no longer acceptable.
OR a minimum of 2 of the following – proof of RESIDENCY is ALSO required:
- Provincial/Federal Government ID Card
- Armed Forces ID card without photo
- Baptismal Certificate
- Birth Certificate
- Naturalization Papers
- Credit Cards
- Current Driver’s License without photo
- Indian Status Card without photo
- Marriage Certificate
- Health Care Insurance Card
- Parental Consent is acceptable proof of Date of Birth when provided.
Examples of Documents that may ASSIST in establishing Proof of Residency:
A Resident is defined as a person lawfully entitled to be in Alberta, who makes their home in Alberta and is ordinarily present in Alberta.
- Telephone bill in clients name – excepting cellular telephones.
- Utility bill in clients name
- Cable bill in clients name
- Pay stub showing clients name and address
- Letter from Employer on Company letterhead
- Official Rent Receipt
- Lease Agreement / Mortgage Documents
- College / University ID or letter on their letterhead.

If we believe that fraudulent identification is being presented, no services shall be provided. Accu-Search Inc. staff are REQUIRED to contact an Alberta Registries Customer Service Co-ordinator, Special Investigations or the Police to report the event.
