In-Transit Permit

An in-transit permit allows a person to move a vehicle or trailer that does not have a valid vehicle registration and licence plate. The in-transit permit can be used in the following situations: 

  1. moving a vehicle between 2 points in Canada (point A to B)
    move a vehicle or trailer that does not have valid registration and licence plate from point A to point B
    valid for up to 7 days after the effective day specified 
  2. for car dealership demonstration/test drive purposes
    demonstration or test drive purposes
    valid for up to 7 days after the effective day specified 
  3. repairs/servicing
    valid for up to 7 days after the effective day specified 
  4. salvage vehicles
    valid for up to 24 hours after the effective day specified 

When you’re moving the vehicle from one province to another, the starting point or ending point must be in Alberta. 

In-Transit Permit are not valid outside of Canada  

How to get an In-transit Permit

You can request an in-transit permit online or or in person at our office. An Alberta.ca Account is required for online requests. 

Online Order

You can purchase an In-Transit Permit online if: 

  • You have an unregistered vehicle or trailer that you want to move. 
  • Your point of origin or point of destination is in Alberta. 
  • You have valid insurance for the vehicle (insurance is not required for trailers). 
  • You are not carrying a load. 

A copy of the In-Transit Permit must be carried in the vehicle at all times during transportation.

To request an in-transit permit in Alberta, you will need the following documents: 

  • Government issued photo identification (E.g. Provincial driver licence) 
  • Proof of insurance 

​​The cost for an in-transit permit is $24.00 

When an unregistered vehicle or trailer is carrying a load, a load licensing permit is needed in addition to the in-transit permit.
